‘FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE’ BY SAM LO
3 – 14 October, 2017
Besser Space, 15-25 Keele Street, Collingwood
Pegasos5 is delighted to present a solo exhibition of artworks by Singaporean artist Sam Lo at Besser Space in Collingwood from 3 – 14 October.
Lo, who also goes by the moniker SKL0, has a distinguished reputation in Singapore as an activist and artist critiquing the social-political norms of her first world island state home.
FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE
In her third solo exhibition, and first in Australia, we encounter an artist who is obsessed with the way Singapore’s inhabitants interact with the urban landscape and how their lives are directed by social expectations, government directives and collective habit. Lo questions what it means to be a citizen in an ostensibly free state in which behaviours are observed by security cameras and crossing the road at the ‘correct’ time is a matter of obligation.
Known popularly as the ‘Sticker Lady’, Lo strategically situates her witty and gently subversive text stickers on everyday street furnishings like traffic lights, rubbish bins and the city’s ubiquitous security cameras. By using ‘Singlish’, the hybrid language of multiracial Singapore, Lo challenges social hierarchies and bureaucratic bans. However, the ephemeral media of the street artist, be it stickers or spray paint, is quickly eliminated by the authorities. Lo therefore documents their existence by photographing them. The photographs in turn become the artworks.
For Better, For Worse sees Lo’s practice extend into vibrant paintings that symbolically document facets of contemporary Singaporean culture as she exchanges temporality for permanent form for the first time.

MEET THE ARTIST | Saturday 7 October, 2-5pm, including artist talk at 3pm
Please join us at Besser Space on Saturday afternoon, 7 October, to meet Sam and play ‘Endurance’!
Combining her sense of humour with humanitarian concerns, Lo has broadened her examination of the challenges of living in a First World City by adapting the children’s game ‘Twister’ to interrogate the decisions we make as global citizens. At each spin of the ‘Endurance’ wheel, the players’ bodies jostle for space and contort to meet the demands of expenses incurred in living a first world existence. Be it taxes, fuel costs, energy expenses or simply shopping for food, the player who can retain their stability for the longest wings the game of first world life!
