Following her acclaimed performances across Europe, Anida Yoeu Ali will present a new iteration of The Red Chador at Art Central in Hong Kong. The interdisciplinary performance explores the global agitator’s thematic interest in using religious aesthetics to provoke ideas of otherness. As a result of recent global events, Ali feels alarmed and disturbed about the political and cultural state of America, and will adapt her performance to emerge from 99 protest signs. Her signs utilize appropriated text from a myriad of sources, including notable political events such as the Umbrella Movement and President Trump’s public speeches. For Art Central, The Red Chador becomes a docent encouraging the public to sign up for her “art” tours, in which art viewers will become participants in the very artwork they have signed up to view. The work questions democracy, civil participation and public complicity.
